You’re going to the gym. You’re sweating. And your body looks the same as six months ago. Before you blame genetics or age, check these five – in our experience they explain nearly every stall, and every one of them is fixable.
1. Nothing is getting heavier
Muscle grows in response to demands it hasn’t met before. Same dumbbells, same machines, same weights for months means your body finished adapting long ago and is now just maintaining. The fix is progressive overload: add weight, reps, or a set – small increases, relentlessly.
2. You change programs every three weeks
Program hopping feels productive – new stimulus! – but progress comes from progressing within a program, not from switching between them. Every switch resets the adaptation clock. Pick something sane and ride it for 8–12 weeks minimum.
3. Junk volume
Ninety minutes of half-effort sets, phone breaks, and “finishers” beats forty-five focused minutes on nothing. Effort concentrated on a few hard sets of big movements outproduces an afternoon of activity. If your sessions run long but nothing feels hard, this is you.
4. The kitchen is undoing the gym
Under-eat protein and there’s no raw material to build with; wildly overeat and the muscle hides under the surplus. You don’t need a food scale – you need a few rules you’ll follow, starting with protein at every meal.
5. Nothing is written down
If you can’t say what you lifted last Tuesday, you can’t beat it this Tuesday. Tracking turns training from activity into a game you can win. It’s also how you catch reasons 1 through 4 before they cost you another six months. This is, not coincidentally, the first thing a coach fixes.
