Online Personal Training: What Real Coaching Looks Like

Online personal training gets a bad reputation because most of it is bad. Cookie-cutter templates sold as “custom programs.” Instagram influencers charging $200 a month for a Google Sheets workout they copied from somebody else. No check-ins, no adjustments, no coaching.

That is not what online training is supposed to be. When it is done right, it gives you the same level of programming and accountability as in-person training without the geographic limitation. I know because I run both, and the results my online clients get are just as strong.

What separates real online coaching from a workout PDF

The difference is simple. A PDF is a product. Coaching is a relationship.

With a PDF, someone writes a program once and sells it to hundreds of people. There is no assessment, no adjustments, no one watching your form or asking about your sleep. If the program does not work, you are on your own.

With real online coaching, your program is written for you based on your assessment, your equipment, your schedule, and your goals. When something is not working, your coach changes it. When you hit a plateau, they adjust. When life gets in the way, they adapt the plan instead of telling you to push through.

How my online coaching works

I deliver programming through Trainerize, which is an app on your phone. You get your workouts with video demonstrations, and you log your sets, reps, and weights so I can track your progress remotely. That data is what drives the adjustments I make each week.

On top of the programming, you get direct messaging access during business hours. That means if you are in the gym and something feels off, you can send me a video and I will respond with modifications. If you are at a restaurant and not sure what to order, we can work through it in real time.

Monthly check-ins cover everything: body measurements, progress photos, how training feels, what is happening with nutrition and sleep. This is where we zoom out and look at the bigger picture, then adjust for the next month.

Who online personal training is for

Not everyone needs to be in the same room as their trainer. Online coaching works well if you already have access to a gym and basic equipment. You know how to move through exercises with decent form, or you are willing to learn through video feedback. You are motivated enough to show up on your own but need the structure and accountability to stay consistent.

It also works for people who travel frequently or have unpredictable schedules. Your program lives on your phone. You can do it at any gym, any time zone.

Where online coaching does not work as well is if you have never touched a barbell and need hands-on form correction from day one. In that case, starting with in-person sessions and transitioning to online later is usually the better path.

The nutrition piece matters just as much

I do not write meal plans. Meal plans fail because nobody eats the same seven meals forever. What I do is help you build a nutrition framework that fits your actual life. We look at your current habits, your calories, your macros, and build a structure that you can maintain.

Training without nutrition guidance is like building a house and skipping the foundation. Your workouts create the stimulus. Your food determines whether your body can actually respond to it. Both have to be dialed in.

What the research says

A 2021 systematic review in Sports Medicine found that remotely supervised exercise programs produced comparable improvements in strength and body composition to in-person training when the programming was individualized and the coaching relationship was maintained. The key word there is individualized. Generic programs delivered remotely do not get the same results.

That matches what I have seen. The clients who succeed with online coaching are the ones who have a real coach on the other end, not an app.

Two tiers, depending on what you need

I offer a Standard tier at $149 a month that includes custom programming, weekday messaging, and monthly check-ins. The VIP tier at $299 adds weekly video calls, 24/7 messaging, and same-week program adjustments when things change fast.

If you have been burned by cookie-cutter programs before, I get it. Book a free consultation and we can talk through whether online coaching makes sense for where you are right now.
