Online coaching has a quality problem: anyone with a phone and a six-pack can sell a “program.” Some of it is excellent. A lot of it is a PDF with a payment link. Here’s how to tell the difference before you spend a dollar.
Red flag 1: everyone gets the same program
Ask how the program is built. If the answer doesn’t involve your schedule, equipment, injury history, and training age, you’re buying a template. Templates aren’t evil – they’re just not coaching, and they shouldn’t be priced like coaching.
Red flags 2 and 3: no check-ins, no form review
Coaching without a weekly check-in is a subscription, not a relationship. And if nobody ever watches you move – no video review, no technique feedback – then nobody knows whether you’re building strength or building injuries.
Red flags 4 and 5: guaranteed timelines and before/after pressure
“Lose 20 pounds in 6 weeks, guaranteed” is marketing, not physiology – bodies don’t sign contracts. Same with coaches whose entire feed is dramatic transformations: extreme short-term results usually mean extreme short-term methods, and the rebound isn’t in the photos.
Red flags 6 and 7: no questions asked, and hidden pricing
A good coach interviews you before taking your money – your goals, your week, what you’ve tried. If the intake is just a checkout page, run. And if you can’t find a price without sitting through a sales call, ask yourself why. We publish ours: coaching is a 90-day, $1,500-minimum investment.
What good looks like
Custom programming, weekly check-ins, direct access, form review, honest timelines, and a price you can see. That’s the bar. Hold every coach to it – including us.
